What is Data Governance at UNLV
Data Governance is the practice of making strategic and effective decisions regarding UNLV's information assets. At UNLV, it assumes a philosophy of freedom of access to University data by all members of the community, coupled with the responsibility to adhere to all policies and all legal constraints that govern that use.
Objectives of Data Governance:
- Improve the quality of the data resulting in greater accuracy, timeliness, and a clear understanding of data.
- Improve the security of the data, including confidentiality and protection from loss.
- Improve ease of access, assure that once data is located, people have enough information about the data to understand how to interpret it.
- Reduce the redundancy of the data so that one piece of information is stored in just one place.
- Establish appropriate responsibility for the management of the University data asset.
Structure of Data Governance Initiative
|
Executive Sponsors appoint Data Stewards, and through data policies and other means, provide direction to them. The Data Governance Council is guided by the charge to data stewards from the Executive Sponsors. Work done by the Data Governance Council will be tracked and documented on this web site - refer back to it for periodic progress updates.
Roles and Responsibilities for Data Governance at UNLV
This structure is formalized into policy as DA01 Structure of the UNLV Data Governance Program - Open a version in MS WORD - which encapsulates in policy the content of the Roles and Responsibilities section of the site. It also references the Proposal for a University Data Management Structure that was approved by CIOC in March 2005, and by Cabinet in April 2005.
