Common Data Set

The CDS represents a joint effort by The College Board, Peterson's, U.S. News & World Report, and Wintergreen/Orchard House, Inc., to standardize data definitions and data elements commonly used in surveys of higher education institutions. The objectives of this standardization initiative are to reduce the time and effort spent by data providers and improve the quality and comparability of the resulting information. To meet these ends, Peterson's and the other CDS publishers incorporate CDS items and definitions into their annual surveys of undergraduate institutions and label them as such.

The CDS currently includes sections profiling institutions' general information, enrollment and persistence, freshman admission, transfer admission, academic offerings and policies, student life, expenses, and financial aid.

Questions and concerns about the CDS can be addressed by contacting Peterson's Research Department using the e-mail form below or by subscribing to the CDS listserve and sharing your comments with the participating publishers, college and university data providers, and other interested parties. To subscribe, send an e-mail to cds@cb1nyo.cblist.edu with the subject-line blank and the following message: subscribe cds-collegeboard
