Data Oversight Committee

Appointed by the Executive Vice President & Provost, the Data Oversight Committee (DOC) consists of senior administrative officials who are responsible for the maintenance of the data governance policies and practices for the institution.

The DOC is responsible for:

  • Establishing and refining the data policy and data governance procedures including access, data maintenance, and training
  • Providing overall strategic direction for the data governance procedures
  • Tracking the progress of overall data initiatives on campus
  • Serving as a board of arbitration on issues of contention surrounding institutional data
  • Conducting oversight to ensure compliance with institutional policies and with state and federal regulations
  • Determining the prioritization of data initiatives
  • Securing resources and assigning responsibility to meet the needs within UNLV’s data environment
  • Determining the custodian for necessary institutional data elements
  • Determining institutionally-approved data environments
  • Determining the elements and prioritization of integration across enterprise data sources
  • Determining the units responsible for producing necessary institutional reports
  • Establishing the procedures for official reports at UNLV
  • Approving data privacy procedures
  • Ensuring there is sufficient initial and ongoing training for all constituents who access and/or are responsible for institutional data (e.g., end users, power users, and data custodians). Such training shall include regular review of rights and responsibilities of all users with access to institutional data.
  • Creating, charging, assessing the effectiveness of, and, as appropriate, decommissioning DOC-affiliated data governance and management groups to implement policies, procedures, and initiatives that arise from the strategic direction set by the DOC.
  • Establishing and enforcing policy that ensures the integrity, security, and privacy requirements for data residing in institutional systems of record are met when those data are extracted for use in on- and off-campus applications and for reporting purposes.
  • Establishing the procedures for official reports at UNLV. This includes:
    • Determining the office responsible for production of a set of official reports (e.g., Office of Decision Support for enrollment reporting)
    • Defining parameters and or formatting of what must be included in official reports
    • Serving as arbitration for disputes on official reports

Membership

Membership of the DOC includes both standing members who are appointed by the nature of their position and rotating members who will serve three-year terms. One-third of the rotating members will be retired annually. The Executive Data Oversight Committee will present to the DOC for approval a slate of possible new candidates for the vacant rotating positions. All members are allowed to send a delegate when they are not available to attend meetings.

  • Vice President for Research and Economic Development - standing
  • Representative(s) from the Office of Vice Provost for Academic Affairs - rotating
  • Representative(s) from Finance and Human Resources - rotating
  • Representative from UNLV Strategic Planning Leadership Team - rotating
  • Representative from the Academic Department Chairs Appointed by the EVP&P - rotating
  • Academic faculty appointee of the Faculty Senate - rotating
  • Liaison from Data Services for Reporting Group - rotating
  • Representative from Data Delivery Architecture Committee - rotating
  • Two At-large members of the data user community - rotating
  • Individuals deemed appropriate by DOC for current agenda - rotating
