UNLV Campus Master Plan
UNLV’s last full update to its campus master plan was approved by the Board of Regents in November 2012. This campus master plan update was significant, in that it not only included updates to the campus master plan for UNLV’s core academic, research, campus life, housing, parking, infrastructure and other core components, but it also incorporated master planning for the UNLVNow proposal, which envisions a 60,000 seat Mega-Events Center and a mixed-use Student Village on the UNLV campus.
The 2012 UNLV Campus Master Plan Update also further incorporates focused planning components that had been developed since the prior UNLV Campus Master Plan Update approved in March 2004. This includes the Midtown UNLV planning vision to create a vibrant University district in Las Vegas, which was the result of campus planning and Urban Land Institute studies conducted in 2006-2007 and the integration of a phased multi-modal transit center in cooperation with the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTCSN), which was approved by the Board of Regents in 2011.
A significant part of this Campus Master Plan Update process is to engage the campus community including students, faculty, staff, alumni and board members, and the community-at-large including adjacent property/business owners and general interested parties to provide information on the nature of UNLV’s goals for campus master planning and development.
The 2012 updated campus master plan focuses on 11 major components, including Academic and Research Space, Housing, Athletics and Recreation, Campus Open Space and Circulation, Campus Events Facilities, Midtown UNLV, University Village, Parking and Campus Access, Mass Transit and Other Means of Transit to Campus, Campus Edges, Image and Gateways, Coordination and Collaboration, among other items.
UNLVNow is the working name given to the western zone of campus (nearest Swenson Avenue) where the Mega Events Center and Student Village are located in the master plan update.
UNLVNow Project elements include:
- A mega-events center on the northwest part of campus. The center would give UNLV a state-of-the-art home for its athletics teams and provide the region with the only events center capable of hosting concerts, sports, and other special events for approximately 60,000 spectators.
- A Student Village offering housing (subject to Clark County and FAA approvals), dining, and shopping, as well as the retail and service activities customarily found adjacent to or as part of residential campuses.
MidtownUNLV is a planning concept for the east side of UNLV (Maryland Parkway) developed in coordination with privately owned land east of Maryland Parkway, to create a University District in Clark County that simultaneously and cooperatively benefits the university and its mission; business interests; and, the interests of the current and future residents in the area and in Clark County.
Prior to UNLV's 2012 update to its campus master plan the last campus master plan was approved by the Board of Regents in March 2004. The 2004 master plan (initiated in 2002-2003) was one of the most formal and comprehensive campus master plans UNLV had created for the campus. Prior to the 2004 Campus Master Plan, UNLV had completed campus physical master plans in 1968, 1978 and 1989. Board of Regents policy specifies that Campus Master Plans be updated approximately every 10 years, with an outlook of not less than 10 years. UNLV’s campus master planning process includes specific discussions of accreditation requirements and meetings with internal accreditation team representives, and ensuring that the campus physical master plan supports the institutional plan for academics, research, campus life, housing and other campus activities and components.
