Below are links to national organizations, and to selected external studies, relevant to measuring university research performance.

The Center for Measuring University Performance is a research enterprise focused on the competitive national context for major research universities.  The Center draws on the insight and recommendations of many colleagues throughout the country who contribute data, information, and perspective. 

• The Top American Research Universities - offers analysis and data useful for understanding American research university performance.  The Center classifies universities into groups based on nine institutional characteristics.  Institutions with federal research expenditures (as reported to the National Science Foundation) of at least $20 million and that place within the top 25 on at least one of the nine measures fall into The Center's definition of the top research universities.  This annual publication provides a comprehensive set of data on over 600 institutions.  The 2010 annual report is here.
